The Straight Line Drill

⏱️ 3 min 📊 Beginner 🖌️ Tool: Pen
Straight line drawing practice

Why this matters: Every masterpiece starts with a single line. Learning to draw straight, confident lines is the foundation of all drawing – from architecture to character art. Your hand needs to build muscle memory, and this drill is where it all begins.

🎯 A gentle reminder: You're not trying to be a machine. Your lines don't need to be perfectly ruler-straight. What matters is control, confidence, and consistency. Wobbly lines are part of the journey – embrace them and keep going!

Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Challenge

1 Setup Your Canvas

Look to the right panel – that's your live drawing app. Make sure the Pen is selected. Set your brush size to 3 or 5 (click the gear icon on the right toolbar). Pick a dark color like #1A1A1A or #2D3436.

If you're feeling brave, try a bright color like #E74C3C – it makes the lines pop and helps you see your progress clearly.

💡 The app auto-saves every stroke. Don't worry if you refresh the page!

2 Draw Horizontal Lines

Most people try to draw lines using just their wrist – and that's why they wobble. Instead, lock your wrist and move your entire forearm from the elbow or shoulder.

Start by drawing 10 horizontal lines across the canvas. Don't rush – focus on smooth, steady motion. Aim to keep the lines roughly parallel and evenly spaced.

  • Keep your grip relaxed – tension makes lines wobble.
  • Look slightly ahead of your pen, not directly at the tip.
  • Don't worry if they're not perfect – we're practicing, not performing!
🤝 Pro Tip: Try drawing from your shoulder, not your wrist. Your arm will thank you, and your lines will be 10x straighter!

3 Go Vertical

Hit Clear on the right toolbar to wipe the canvas. Now draw 10 vertical lines from top to bottom. Aim for the same smooth, steady motion – this time moving your arm up and down.

Notice the difference between horizontal and vertical lines. Most people find one direction easier than the other. That's normal!

Try this: Alternate between horizontal and vertical lines. Draw 3 horizontals, then 3 verticals, then 3 horizontals again. This trains your arm to move freely in all directions.

4 🏆 The Challenge

Click "Clear" on the right toolbar. Now set a timer for 60 seconds.

Your mission: Draw as many straight lines as you can – but here's the twist – alternate between horizontal and vertical after every line.

  • Horizontal → Vertical → Horizontal → Vertical…
  • Focus on smooth motion, not speed.
  • Try to keep a consistent gap between each line.

When the timer is up, hit the Save button to download your practice sheet!

Remember: Wobbly lines are a sign you're building control. Every artist started exactly where you are right now. Keep going!
