How to Draw a Bird

⏱️ 7 min 📊 Beginner 🖌️ Tool: Pen
Simple bird drawing tutorial

Why this matters: Birds are fascinating creatures to draw – they combine organic shapes, flight dynamics, and expressive poses. Learning to draw a bird teaches you about proportion, wing structure, and capturing life in your drawings. This skill is essential for drawing animals, fantasy creatures, and even angels!

🎯 A gentle reminder: Your first bird might look more like a potato with wings – and that's completely okay! What matters is understanding the basic structure and the flow of the wings. Every bird you draw will become more graceful!

Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Challenge

1 Setup Your Canvas

Look to the right panel – that's your live drawing app. Make sure the Pen is selected. Set your brush size to 3 or 5 (click the gear icon on the right toolbar). Pick a dark color like #2D3436 or #1A1A1A.

Optional: Turn on the Grid (Settings → Show Grid) – it can help you keep things centered!

💡 The app auto-saves every stroke. Don't worry if you refresh the page!

2 Draw the Body & Head

A bird is essentially an oval for the body with a smaller circle for the head. Let's start with the basic shapes.

  • Draw an oval in the center of the canvas – this is the body.
  • Draw a smaller circle on top of the body for the head.
  • The head should overlap the body slightly.
  • Pro tip: Make the body oval slightly longer than it is wide.

Try this: Draw the body at a slight angle to make your bird look like it's perched or in flight!

🐦 Pro Tip: Look at a picture of a bird. Notice how the body is roughly the size of an egg, and the head is about a quarter of the body size. Keep these proportions in mind!

3 Add Wings & Tail

Hit Clear on the right toolbar. Draw the body and head again, then let's add the wings and tail.

  • Wings: Draw a teardrop shape coming from the side of the body.
  • Tail: Add a small, pointed shape at the back of the body.
  • Beak: Draw a small triangle on the front of the head.
  • Legs: Add two thin lines coming down from the bottom of the body.

Try this: Draw the wings in different positions – folded, spread open, or mid-flap!

🪽 Pro Tip: The wing is like a big leaf attached to the side of the bird. It should curve slightly at the top and taper to a point at the end. Practice drawing wings in different positions!

4 Add Details & Feathers

Now let's make your bird look more realistic with some details.

  • Eye: Add a small circle with a tiny dot inside for the eye.
  • Feathers: Add short curved lines on the wings to show feathers.
  • Legs: Add small lines at the bottom of the legs for feet.
  • Branch: Draw a thin horizontal line under the feet for the bird to perch on.

Try this: Add a cloud or a simple background to show your bird in its environment!

🌿 Pro Tip: The details are what make a bird feel alive. Even just a few extra lines for feathers or a branch to perch on can transform your bird from basic to beautiful!

5 🏆 The Challenge

Click "Clear" on the right toolbar. Now set a timer for 5 minutes.

Your mission: Draw three different birds – each one in a different pose.

  • Bird 1: A bird perched on a branch (sitting still)
  • Bird 2: A bird in flight (wings spread open)
  • Bird 3: A bird pecking at the ground or eating
  • Bonus: Add a nest with eggs or a birdhouse!

When the timer is up, hit the Save button to download your bird collection!

Remember: Every artist starts with potato-shaped birds. The more you draw, the more graceful they become. Keep flying – your perfect bird is just a few drawings away!
