1 Setup Your Canvas
Look to the right panel – that's your live drawing app. Make sure the Pen is selected. Set your brush size to 3 or 5 (click the gear icon on the right toolbar). Pick a dark color like #2D3436 or #1A1A1A.
Optional: Turn on the Grid (Settings → Show Grid) – it can help you keep the rose centered and balanced!
2 Draw the Spiral Center
Every rose begins with a spiral in the center – this is the bud that all the petals wrap around. This is the most important step!
- Draw a small circle in the center of the canvas.
- Wrap a small spiral around it, like a cinnamon roll.
- Add a second loop around the first – slightly wider and looser.
- Keep the spiral lines rough and wobbly – real rose petals aren't perfect circles!
Try this: Use the spiral skills you learned in the Spiral Challenge tutorial. The tighter the spiral, the more petals your rose will have!
3 Add the Outer Petals
Hit Clear on the right toolbar. Draw the spiral center again, then let's add the outer petals.
- Draw 4 to 6 large, curved shapes around the spiral center.
- Each petal should be a soft, rounded shape – like a folded piece of paper.
- The petals should overlap each other and the spiral center.
- Petal edges can be wavy or slightly ruffled – real roses have irregular edges!
Try this: Draw the petals in different sizes – a couple of large ones in the back and smaller ones near the front. This creates depth.
4 Add the Stem & Leaves
Now let's complete your rose with a stem and leaves.
- Stem: Draw a curved line going down from the bottom of the rose.
- Add a second parallel line slightly beside it to give the stem thickness.
- Leaves: Draw two or three pointed oval shapes branching off the stem.
- Add a center vein down each leaf and small side veins.
- Optional: Add a small thorn (tiny triangle) on the stem.
Try this: Curve the stem slightly – real roses rarely stand perfectly straight. A subtle S-curve looks more natural.
5 🏆 The Challenge
Click "Clear" on the right toolbar. Now set a timer for 6 minutes.
Your mission: Draw three different roses – each one in a different style.
- Rose 1: A classic open rose (like the one we just drew)
- Rose 2: A tight rose bud (just a small spiral with two petals peeking out)
- Rose 3: A rose from the side (showing the stem and one or two petals)
- Bonus: Add a decorative border, a heart, or the word "Love" next to one of your roses!
When the timer is up, hit the Save button to download your rose collection!
