How to Draw a Cloud

⏱️ 6 min 📊 Beginner 🖌️ Tool: Pen
Simple cloud drawing tutorial

Why this matters: Clouds are everywhere in art – from landscape paintings to children's book illustrations. Learning to draw a cloud teaches you about organic shapes, soft curves, and creating volume with simple lines. This skill is essential for drawing skies, creating atmospheric scenes, and adding depth to your artwork!

🎯 A gentle reminder: Your first cloud might look like a blob or a fluffy potato – and that's completely okay! What matters is understanding the soft, billowy shape and how to build volume with simple curves. Every cloud you draw will become more airy and beautiful!

Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Challenge

1 Setup Your Canvas

Look to the right panel – that's your live drawing app. Make sure the Pen is selected. Set your brush size to 3 or 5 (click the gear icon on the right toolbar). Pick a dark color like #2D3436 or #1A1A1A.

Optional: Turn on the Grid (Settings → Show Grid) – it can help you keep things centered!

💡 The app auto-saves every stroke. Don't worry if you refresh the page!

2 Draw the Basic Cloud Shape

A cloud is essentially a collection of soft, rounded shapes joined together. Let's start with the basic structure.

  • Start by drawing three overlapping circles in a horizontal line – these form the top of the cloud.
  • Add two more circles below them to fill out the bottom.
  • Each circle should overlap the next – this creates the fluffy, billowy look.
  • Pro tip: The circles don't need to be perfect – clouds are irregular!

Try this: Make the cloud wider or taller – clouds come in all shapes and sizes!

☁️ Pro Tip: Look up at the sky (or at a picture of clouds). Notice how clouds are made of soft, rounded bumps that merge together. That's what we're trying to capture!

3 Refine the Outline

Hit Clear on the right toolbar. Draw the overlapping circles again, then let's refine the outline.

  • Draw a continuous curved line around the outside of all the circles.
  • This outline should follow the bumps of the circles.
  • Make the bottom of the cloud slightly flatter than the top.
  • Add some small bumps on the edges for a more natural look.

Try this: Don't make the outline too perfect – a slightly wobbly line makes the cloud look softer and more realistic!

☁️ Pro Tip: The secret to a good cloud is making the outline feel soft and organic. If the line is too stiff or geometric, the cloud won't look fluffy. Think of it as drawing a pillow!

4 Add Shading & Details

Now let's make your cloud look more three-dimensional with some shading.

  • Light shadow: Add some light curved lines on the bottom of the cloud to show shadow.
  • Dark shadow: Add darker, thicker lines on the lower edges for depth.
  • Highlight: Leave the top edges lighter or add a few thin lines on top.
  • Texture: Add a few small curved lines inside the cloud to show texture.

Try this: Draw a small sun peeking out from behind the cloud – it adds a beautiful contrast!

🌤️ Pro Tip: The shading is what makes your cloud look fluffy and three-dimensional. The bottom should be darker (shadow) and the top should be lighter (where the sun hits). Think of the cloud as a big, soft marshmallow!

5 🏆 The Challenge

Click "Clear" on the right toolbar. Now set a timer for 5 minutes.

Your mission: Draw three different types of clouds – each one with a different shape or style.

  • Cloud 1: A big, fluffy cumulus cloud (the classic cloud shape)
  • Cloud 2: A long, wispy cirrus cloud (thin and streaky)
  • Cloud 3: A dramatic storm cloud (dark and heavy at the bottom)
  • Bonus: Draw a beautiful sky scene with multiple clouds and a sun!

When the timer is up, hit the Save button to download your cloud collection!

Remember: Every artist starts with blob-shaped clouds. The more you draw, the more airy and beautiful they become. Keep floating – your perfect cloud is just a few drawings away!
